Using Software Recognition to Merge Software Products

Postby pille on Fri Oct 01, 2010 8:35 am

I was working with a customer and he suggested I post my answer here in the forum - and ya know, I think it was a good idea so here we are.

There's a couple ways to do this. One is more manual, but easier and the other is more automated and takes a bit to setup.

Let's say we want to merge Firefox 3 versions together.

1. In Navigator create a Tracked Software record and add each version of Firefox 3 to it under products.
2. In Discovery create a New Product and a Recognition rule to merge all versions into one.

Here's how to do #2.

If you go into Discovery > Administrative Settings > Software Catalog and open up a Software Product, you'll see Recognition Rules there. This is what maps the registry values to the Software Products to determine what installations a computer has.

So let's say Firefox was detected like this

Product Name: Firefox
Product Version: 3.1.0

Product Name: Firefox
Product Version: 3.2.0

And you just wanted to track 3.x all together.

Follow these steps:

1. Under Management, click New
2. Product Name = Firefox 3.x
3. Version = (ALL) - I like using (ALL) since it helps make the ones you create stand out
4. Go under Recognition Rules
5. Click New
6. Select Active
7. Click Add > Add Registry Condition
8. Product Name = Firefox
9. Product Version = 3.*

Save all that and perform an audit. Now all version 3.* versions will be grouped under this one and you can simply track Firefox based on that product once it's imported into Navigator.

One word of caution - be careful with the recognition rules. They are helpful or hurtful depending on how you use them. For instance, changing an existing rule incorrectly can cause very incorrect results.
