anonymous access and security risks

I've been delaying configuring ANI to run OnDemand audits, because of the need to "enable anonymous access" on the server and the null session share. Isn't there a better way?
I remember these being holes I needed to close on NT systems. Have things changed with them on XP/2000/2003 systems?

The latest available release of Alloy Network Inventory is version 4.2. There were no changes in the application design for approximately two years.
