Old Audit Data: How do I archive or clean up old data?

Postby abrezina on Thu Mar 01, 2007 1:22 pm

I like to run our Audit about 1-2 times per week.

The problem is our database is getting HUGE! I would like the ability to save the original audt info, and then just keep maybe the last five changes to the machine. Any possible way this can be accomplished?

Assuming you're using Alloy Navigator 5.2, you'll want to check the change history section under administrative settings > network inventory. There's a section there on how long the application will hold onto audit history. I think by default it's a year.

Actually I am using 4.5.3. The database grew to be about 1.6GB and finally crashed. I was able to recover the database from the night before and ran the repair and compact tool on my database. It reduced the size to 230MB! That was quite a big difference in size. What exactly does this repair and compact tool do?

I'm guessing you're running one of the older Access database versions of our software?

Regardless, both Access and SQL have tools that allow for repairing, compacting, etc, the database. This would usually be considered routine maintenance since databases can run wild after a while.

In your case it did away with all the wasted space in the database. You'll probably see a boost in performance as well.
