It uses a proprietary compression scheme.

So, I can forget writing my own analyzer for our HP-UX systems. Can the Linux one be made to work under HP-UX?

Well can you hook me up with a compression utility, and a layout guide for the files before they are compressed?

If you want to get the files into readable format, you should use the XML export utility that's included with Network Inventory. Once you have the files in XML format you can easily do further processing or import them into a database.
