Network Inventory navigator on Netware & Network issues

Postby soorama on Wed Apr 10, 2002 6:49 am

We are thinking of testing the above product - but we need some information -
1) can Network Inventory navigator be implemented on a Netware 4.11 server, if so, are you aware of any issues.
2) how much network traffic is generated by the download of the client to the desktop\'s.
3) does network inventory navigator downloads any agents to the workstations or does it retrieve the information on the fly. If it downloads any agents are there any issues with Windows 95 desktop.
4) can inventory navigator be trained - so it learns about bespoke applications.

1. Some of our customers have been running Network Inventory Navigator on
Netware. The only issue so far was related to automatic detection of the user ID when the audit scanner is run from the login script.
However, this can be worked around by passing the user ID from the Novell login script:

ina32.exe /user=%LOGIN_NAME

2. how much network traffic is generated by the download of the client to the desktop\'s.

Network traffic is ~320 Kb per desktop: 290 Kb to launch the inventory scanner from the server, plus ~20 Kb to put the snapshot on the server.

3. does network inventory navigator downloads any agents to the workstations or does it retrieve the information on the fly. If it downloads any agents are there any issues with Windows 95 desktop.

The information is retrieved on the fly, however, the audit scanner must be launched locally on each desktop. For that purpose, the inventory scanner - ina32.exe should be deployed into a shared network location, accessible by all workstations on your network. After that, you should include a launch command in the network login script, so that the scanner is executed automatically during login.

4. can inventory navigator be trained - so it learns about bespoke applications.

Currently it cannot be trained. However, certain application are not being identified due to a bug in the inventory scanner. Because of this bug, products installed under a user\'s account are not being detected. The fix will be provided in the next release.
