Registering new software

Postby limtc on Thu Oct 23, 2003 12:07 pm

Hi there, I used the file scan configuration setting in deployment wizard to search for a *.com in a specific directory. Ran the audit and loaded audited data. But I could see the scanned *.com software in the list of software. Couldn't find it in the SRM either. Did I miss out any step?

Please advise. Thanks.

Check that 'show only EXE files' is not checked in the SRM data menu.

Uncheck the 'show only EXE files"in SRM data menu. Still couldn't see any unrecognized files in the SRM or in the software list. Tried scanning for EXE files instead of COM files. Same problem.

By the way, I am using AN Professional Edition 4.2.3 build 1452.

Any things else I should check?

Thanks.

Same Problem with File Scan

Postby Dworacek on Mon Dec 15, 2003 12:47 pm

I have the same problem with asset navigator. Version 4.2.4 Build 1452
ina32.exe Version 4.1.8.745

It had worked, but after some changes in File Scan Configuration of Deployment Wizard it don't work anymore.

I found the Problem - workaround

Postby Dworacek on Mon Dec 15, 2003 2:15 pm

The Problem is in the Deployment wizard.
In File Scan Profile Settings - Files TAB
There must be at least one File marked for detailed scan.
If it is - then all Files are found !
Even those which are only marked for summary scan.
If no File is marked for detailed scan then nothing is found !
This means if you are looking for 10 different Files and all of
this Files are marked for summary scan - nothing will be found!
Mark only one of this 10 Files for detailed scan - than all
the 10 Files are found.
I think this must be a bug

Comments and info

It might be difficult to grasp the idea of "Detailed Scan" vs. "Summary Scan", even though it explained in the Help file and Getting Started manuals.

Here is a very simple rule of thumb:

* use "Detailed Scan" if you need to be able track individual files (i.e. use the File Find feature) matching the file mask

* use "Summary Scan" if you only need to collect usage statistic (i.e. total disk space occupied by the files of this type) for the file mask

So it looks like you found the right way to configure the File Scan for *.com files, rather than just a workaround.

We realize that some of that confusion comes from the fact that you can only select one scan type (either Detailed or Summary) for any particular file mask. In the upcoming releases of Network Inventory Navigator 4.1 and Asset Navigator 4.2.5 the File Scan configuration will be more intuitive and flexible. It will allows to include each particular file mask in both types of scan.
