Computer Owners

Postby jasonstarkey on Wed Oct 28, 2009 10:09 am

I have recently been asked by my manager to identify which systems "belong" to which users. Our customer service branch has not really been using alloy correctly by updating and verify that data of systems they issue out. In saying that I would have initially just provided a report of Owner and computer model, or computer name. This would tell me who has what system, and what the system is.

But Owner seems to reflect what appears to be the person who first logged in, or who first performed the audit? The audits run via login scripts, and are setup to only audit once a week. Since the customer service branch hasn't beed educated on the Owner field there a way for me to determine better which user "owns" which system?

I find the owner field can be updated any time it's blank. Because of this we sometimes clear the field for certain computers to reset the current owner during the next audit import.

Consider though if the owner changed each time a person logged into a computer this could be confusing in itself especially if different people log into the same machine. Also, in some cases there is no owner, for example: a kiosk or other public terminal. We use an internal process to set the owner manually and not have it changed unless the computer is moved to a new location which may or may not work for you.

Having said that I think there may be a way to track the last logged in user and update the current owner automatically. I haven't tested this but I would contact Alloy Support about it. I'm sure they would know how or even have a better recommendation.
